One second. That’s all it takes for your life to change course. That second could lead to the happiest of times. In that one second you may discover you are pregnant with your first child, the love of your life proposes, you land the job you’ve been working so hard for, you get accepted to your dream school…
Or, that one second could bring devastating news…a death in the family, a cancer diagnosis, you get fired from your job…
And then there is the second that brings silence. Silence that is deafening and unexplainable. This is where One Second After by William R. Forstchen begins. A deafening silence that has no answers. A silence that brings panic and hysteria.
One Second After explores what the United States would like after an EMP. EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse weapon. The basics of an EMP is when an atomic bomb is detonated above the earth’s atmosphere, it can generate a pulse wave. This pulse wave travels faster than the speed of light and will short circuit every electronic device that the wave touches on the earth’s surface.
Think about all of the things that are powered by electronics. Think of all the things you use every single day that require electronics to run…your cell phone, refrigerator, car, air conditioning…the list goes on and on. Almost everything we use in this modern world uses electronic components and sometimes that electric circuit is so small it takes a pair of tweezers to pick it up.
Now think of a world where none of those things work. A society that has become so codependent on their cell phones, modern refrigeration, cars that only computers can fix. Actual computers! A society that has become more and more dependent on prescription drugs. What if those drugs can no longer be manufactured? For example, think of the person who relies on anti-depressants or anti-psychotic medication. What happens to that person when the remaining medication they have runs out? When their body goes through withdrawal from the medication?
One Second After explores all of these scenarios and more in a fictional account of an EMP. But…please remember an EMP is an actual threat. There is a forward by Newt Gingrich that explains this in better detail than I possibly could.
I couldn’t put this book down! John Matherson is the man every person wants in their corner when the going gets tough. You’ll find yourself cheering for him throughout the book and crying with him during all the hard decisions he has to make.
This is book one of a trilogy. And honestly, for the first time I’m not sure I’m going to read the other two books. This may be one of the best books I’ve ever read but it was also heart wrenching. Right now…my heart needs a break.
Lastly…I’d like to point out that if you struggle with anxiety, this may not be the book for you. The subject matter is very real and not everyone’s heart is strong enough. And, that’s ok. Much love to you!
Happy reading to everyone! If you have a book you’ve loved, please share. I’m always looking for my next great read.
